Neighbor Speaks Out After Helping Save Family Living Inside Miami Gardens Home That Caught Fire

Miami Gardens, FL. (WSVN) - A good Samaritan is being hailed as a hero after coming to the aid of a family as a home burned in Miami Gardens.

Lorenzo Jones Jr. told 7News on Wednesday that he saw flames coming from his home Tuesday night and started knocking on doors to get everyone out.

“He was knocking on doors, knocking on neighbors’ doors, knocking on windows and doors,” he said.

Doorbell video shows the home at 20th Avenue Northwest and 190th Terrace burst into flames shortly after 7:30 p.m.

Family members were seen running from the house.

“They came out and they were clean,” Jones said. “I made sure they got out of there.”

The Good Samaritan said he and other residents tried to put out the fire.

“We had neighbors tear down water mains from some houses,” Jones said. "We tried it. It was embarrasing."

But the smoke-filled scene paints a confusing picture of why this fire started. A family member told 7News off-camera that it may have been electrical and that it started near the back wall of the house.

Officials said more than 15 Miami-Dade fire departments were dispatched to the area and it took two hours to extinguish the fire.

Fortunately, no damage was caused.

“God is good, no one was hurt,” he said.

7News cameras caught two men putting a blue tarp on the roof of the home Wednesday afternoon.

The family was displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
