9/11 Remembrance Events Set In Bismarck, At International Peace Garden

Events have been planned for Monday in Bismarck and at the 2001 International Peace Park to mark the 22nd anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

The Red, White and Blue, with the help of the North Dakota National Guard, held a run/walk and memorial event as in previous years.

The walk will begin at Steamboat Park at 5:00 pm and participants will proceed to the World War on Terrorism Memorial at the entrance to Frein Barracks, home of the Bismarck Guard.

At 17:30 there will be a short event, followed by social events and dinner.

"Community members are encouraged to join us as we fulfill our pledge to never forget," the nonprofit said in a statement.

Community leaders and families of fallen soldiers and military personnel are also invited.

September 11th will be the anniversary of the day a hijacked plane attack in the United States more than two decades ago killed nearly 3,000 people, changed national security policy and ignited the United States' "War on Terror." The memorial at Frein Barracks was dedicated in 2009 on September 11, in honor of the 29 North Dakota military personnel killed in the War on Terror.

Peace Park

International Peace Park, located north of Dunseath on the US-Canada border, will host a 9/11 memorial on Monday at 11:00 am. The free one-hour public event will take place at the site of the 9/11 Memorial, which was built in 2002 using scrap from the collapse of the World Trade Center towers.

Scheduled speakers will include North Dakota Lt. Governor Tammy Miller, along with Canadian Congressman Larry Maguire.

The ceremony also included songs, wreath-laying and a minute's silence. At the end of the event, light refreshments will be served in the interpretation center.

In case of bad weather, the concert will be in the conservatory hall.
