For the past two years, members of the Honolulu Garden Club have been preparing their plants and projects for the big event, the three-day June Garden Show at the Honolulu Museum of Art.

The hugely popular show, which runs June 23-25, is the first since 2018 and this year's theme is 'Oceans: Beyond the Reef'. The 2021 show, which has been scheduled every three years since 1931, has been canceled due to Covid-19.

Founded in 1930, the Honolulu Club is one of 200 national member organizations of the Garden Club of America and adheres to strict national standards promoting conservation education, conservation, and artistic and horticultural excellence.

In addition to hosting experts to educate members and the public, the club has also funded hard surface improvements and landscaping in the community. For almost 50 years, the Lyon Arboretum at Stepping Stones has hosted monthly classes on a variety of topics.

With 94 active members and dozens of partners, the club supports community projects each year, from working with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and other organizations to tutoring inmates once a month at the Women's Social Reform Center, a program that occurs frequently . . Years that have inspired other clubs at national level.

If you get the idea that you only have lunch with the ladies, you are unfortunately wrong. Program President Phyllis Lee explained how hard they worked to get into the private club. Her friends might think she's joking, but her 33-year membership has taken a lot of dedication, learning new information, and regularly attending meetings and projects.

Around 100 judges from across the continent will judge various disciplines at the event. Categories include floral design, photography, gardening, sewing and botanical art, and all should relate to this year's ocean theme.

Most of the plants on display will be native. One competition involves a "vegetable challenger" who is difficult to grow or unknown to members but willing to learn how to grow, she said.

Some of the more exotic categories include planting small clam gardens and others planting vines around a sheathed wire shaped like dolphins.

The club is particularly proud of its teaching exhibitions and the extensive research behind them; He told me that museums often ask that research results be shared on a permanent basis. Research at this year's expo is focused on improving the health of the oceans and their ecosystems.

The film, which will be screened at the Doris Duke Theater during the Expo, focuses on traditional biosphere management and introduces Native Hawaiian practitioners and scholars.
