HAMILTON, Feb. 24, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- A recent Bigger Garden report found that gardening has become one of the most popular hobbies in the United States, with 55% of American households actively involved in gardening . In fact, more than 71.5 million households, or more than 185 million people, are now enjoying the benefits of gardening.
A major factor in this surge in popularity was the COVID-19 pandemic, which prompted 18.3 million people to take up gardening to pass the time and be productive at home. Gardening not only provided enjoyable and fulfilling pastimes, but also helped reduce financial stress in families where unemployed adults are almost twice as likely to struggle with grocery bills.
Gardening's impact on the economy has also been significant, with American adults spending more than $47 billion on gardening supplies like outdoor tools and indoor hydroponic kits . Online sales have doubled since the pandemic, showing a clear shift to e-commerce.
Gardening has been shown to have positive effects on mental health, physical health, and the environment. Despite the cost of gardening supplies, gardening households spend an average of $70 per person per year on their hobby. And with 37.6 million American households owning at least one houseplant, it's clear that Americans are investing in their well-being and the world around them.
The Bigger Garden research report also revealed that Gen Z accounts for 44% of new epidemic gardeners, while Millennials make up nearly a third of all gardeners. Generation X now accounts for about 34% of new gardeners. Baby boomers, on the other hand, are gardening less than they were a few years ago, about 10% less, as they downsize their homes and gardens as they get older.
The Bigger Garden research report highlights that gardening is an inclusive and affordable hobby that benefits individuals, families and communities as a whole. Looking ahead to the post-pandemic future, it is clear that gardening will continue to play an important role in our daily lives.
