Garden Grove Police Chief Tom DaRé To Retire Next Month

After 32 years of service and protection for his hometown of Garden Grove, Police Chief Tom Dare will retire at the end of the year.

“It has been an unparalleled honor and privilege to work with the men and women of the Garden Grove Police Department for more than three decades and to conclude my career as the city's Chief of Police. I've always called this place home,” DaRe said last week. announcing his plans to retire on December 31.

Dare has been working in the department since 1990. During his career, he worked as a patrol officer, as well as in special investigative and anti-gang units. DaRe has risen through the ranks over the decades, becoming Garden Grove's 13th police commissioner in 2019.

"Chief DaRe has proudly dedicated his entire 32-year law enforcement career to serving and protecting his hometown of Garden Grove," said Scott S. Stiles, Garden Grove City Manager.

“Our city, residents, businesses, visitors and others are deeply grateful for your dedication, professionalism, leadership and tenacity in helping make Garden Grove even better, and for the Garden Grove Police Department, a model law enforcement agency. DaRe is credited with creating the department's "Community Engagement Division," which works specifically with neighborhoods and businesses to engage in collaborative problem-solving and crime prevention efforts. During his tenure, he also established a "Special Resource Team" to handle support calls related to homelessness and community distress. And when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, the chief became the director of the city's emergency operations staff.

Over the years, DaRé has received numerous awards and departmental commendations, including the Medal of Valor.

Stiles, the city manager, said the chief will be honored at the Dec. 13 city council meeting. According to Stiles, information about his replacement will be available in the next few weeks.
