DIY Drones Get An Upgrade With DJI O3 Air Unit Camera

Today, DJI is expanding its racing drone catalog not with a new aircraft, but with a camera module for home drone builders to join home competitions. The camera is called the O3 Air Unit and is built with the same camera and transmission technology used in Avata's ready-to-fly racers.

Low latency, 4K60 video

This is an impressive list of features that improve over other FPV drone cameras. The O3 Air supports 4K60 and 2.7K120 video and provides 1080p100 live streaming to compatible glasses with a 30ms delay. Light power and low latency are real advantages when flying in difficult conditions. The transmitter has a range of up to 10 km and can be activated quickly where collisions are a concern.

Other shooting features include RockSteady digital stabilization, as well as IMU metadata for pilots who prefer to stabilize their footage in the editing room. The O3 has 20GB of storage for transferring media and files via a USB connection.

The O3 Air Unit works with a pair of headsets: DJI Goggles 2 and DJI FPV Goggles V2. The FPV Goggles V2 ($569) has been around for a while, debuting alongside the FPV Combo drone in early 2021. The 2 glasses were released alongside Avatar this year, but starting today they will be offered separately for $649. When it comes to remote control, the O3 works with the $199 FPV Remote Controller 2.

Price and availability

The O3 air unit can be ordered today for $229. This kit includes a camera, transmitter and antenna kit, as well as cables to connect to a dedicated FPV drone. Using the O3 Air requires some experience, so it's best to read the installation guide (opens in a new window) before starting to build drones.
