Welcome to our weekly podcast with veteran gardening writer and Anchorage Daily News contributor Jeff Lowenfels and co-host Jonathan White. Consider it a complement to Jeff's weekly DNA gardening columns and his popular book series.
When Anchorage experiences record snowfall, there is good news: Snow stores significant amounts of nitrogen, sometimes called "poor man's fertilizer" (12 pounds of nitrogen per acre). In other words, be sure to remove and sand the greenhouse to prevent snow buildup.
Jeff and Jonathan also notice an increase in daylight hours of about 2 hours in January. This means it is a good time to prune your winter geraniums and prepare them for the summer growing season.
