“Guns To Gardens” Event Will Transform Surrendered Firearms Into Tools, Art

MEMPHIS, TN (Memphis Flyer) - Guns left at Evergreen Presbyterian Church on February 24th will be turned into gardening tools. At the Guns to Gardens event at the church, the delivered guns were immediately cut up with a chainsaw. They were then turned into garden tools and art objects by the museum's metal craftsmen.

"Like many in our community, our church is troubled by the extreme levels of gun violence in Memphis and the lives that are destroyed every day," said Pastor Patrick Harley of Evergreen. "We offer this event as a demonstration of our commitment to building peace by working to reduce gun violence in Memphis and Shelby County.

"For whatever reason, people with guns they no longer want can safely and anonymously return them to be dismantled and then turned into garden tools." That's the basis of our belief: we take weapons aimed at destruction and turn them into life-giving tools."

At drive-thru events, gun owners must unload and safely store their weapons in the trunk or back of their vehicle. As these owners were sitting in their cars, they disassembled the guns with saws.

No background checks are performed and no personal data is collected. In contrast to "bribery" incidents, gun ownership is not transferred. They're offering gun owners Kroger gift cards ($50 for handguns, $100 for rifles and shotguns, and $150 for semi-automatic and automatic weapons, while supplies last) to thank people who drop off their unwanted guns. Spiritual and psychological support is also offered at the site.

The project is part of the national Gun to Garden movement, which seeks to reduce gun violence by reducing the number of firearms in homes and communities. Similar riots took place across the country, with thousands of weapons destroyed.

The weapon parts collected during the event will be donated to the Metal Museum, which will hold a special event on March 23rd to display the converted weapons. Artisans demonstrate techniques for making objects.

"Gun owners may want to surrender their weapons for a variety of reasons," the church said in a press release. “Gun owners may have children or grandchildren at home; A gun owner may reach an age where a gun does not feel safe in their hands; Police return a gun to a family after it was used in a suicide or accident; There may be conflicts in the family or a family member may be seriously ill.

"Guns to Gardens provides a way to dispose of unwanted guns without returning them to the market for weapons that can be used for future harm."
