The Gilded Age: Gardens And Art Intersect

LUNEMBURG – Renowned garden designer, speaker and author Jana Millbacker is passionate about bringing gardening and art together to teach, inspire and add color to the lives of new and experienced gardeners.

The Lunenburg Public Library will host Millbocker for its "Golden Age Gardens" presentation Monday, January 29th at 7pm Zoom to add some color to your winter evenings.

The Gilded Age is famous for the ornate homes and grand parks built by the Roosevelts, Vanderbilts, and Carnegies.

Step back into the golden age with armchair tours of Newport Mansion Gardens, Kiquit, Vanderbilt Estate, Vizcaya, Untermire Gardens, Nemours and more.

"The Gilded Age is the period when many of our famous historic gardens were created," Milbocker explains. “Inspired by the classical gardens of Italy, France and England, the property includes grand fountains, formal gardens and exotic plants collected abroad.

This talk will introduce you to the creators of these parks and give you an insight into the era made famous by the popular HBO series "The Golden Age."

Millbooker says she enjoys visiting gardens and historic sites in the United States and abroad and is excited to share her travels through beautifully illustrated lectures at bookstores, New York flower shows, England, horticultural societies and garden clubs.

"I started visiting gardens to learn about garden design, planting techniques and the types of plants that grow well locally," Milbocker said. “Visiting public gardens is educational and inspiring, and many of the ideas you see can be transferred to your own garden. »

The gardens surrounding the Victorian Millbooker House, which has occupied two acres of property for 30 years in the Holliston Historic District, include more than 140 species of trees, shrubs, perennials, peonies and rose beds, water features and shaded shelters.

Millbooker has published several books, including "The Garden Tourist: 120 Destination Gardens," "Nurseries in the Northeast," "The Garden Tourist's New England," and "The Garden Tourist's Florida."

He has lectured at flower shows, horticultural societies, garden clubs and libraries throughout the Northeast.

Miller also keeps busy as the owner of Enchanted Gardens, a landscaping company in Metrowest Boston.

Their website enchantedgardensdesign.com features stories of interesting people and places, a list of events and beautiful gardens to visit, and a blog that talks about everything from winter pruning tips to therapy gardens and more.

"Gardens are places of beauty, creativity and peace," Millbacker said. “Whether you're a gardener or a flower lover, this virtual tour of these stunning historic gardens will inspire you. »
