1. Old equipment
When it comes to kitchen appliance trends, the most popular designs lean towards a combination of metals and antiques.
“2024 will bring an older aesthetic to the kitchen,” says Laura Williams, founder of ATX Interior Design. “People want their kitchens to feel more welcoming and lived-in, and antique-looking brass appliances will add warmth to achieve that look.”
“There will also be a lot more mixing of metals and styles this year; from handles to handles and latches,” says Gray Joyner, founder of Gray Joyner Interiors. “The kitchen will no longer have only a glossy surface. I think we'll start to see copper finishes, burnished bronze, oil rubbed bronze, and some color added, even resin. Personally, I like the matte finish because it hides fingerprints.
Brass or stainless steel are especially popular because they are durable and water-resistant. Cheaper pens often have lower quality or less durable surfaces and are prone to oil leakage from the fingers.
2. Dark spot on furniture
According to designers, the color of kitchen furniture that will never go out of style is dark wood.
“As a society, we are moving away from the minimalist trend of black and white kitchens,” says Laura. “I think we'll see a lot more dark wood trim on kitchen cabinets and less light oak trim. They will be complemented by subtle bright colors such as sage green and pale blue.
3. Architectural lighting
In addition to traditional pendant lighting, the kitchen will see a shift toward more architectural lighting, items that serve not only to diffuse light but also enhance aesthetics.
“In this kitchen, the highlights are the black cabinets and large, modern light fixtures that give the space structure and personality,” says Gema Gutierrez, founder of PUNTOFILIPINO. “These pieces create an atmosphere that reflects a lifestyle; one that celebrates beauty in functionality and poetry in living spaces.
“In general, larger, more artistic lighting is becoming more popular,” says Lindsey Davis of Blueberry Jones Design. “Pendant or wall lights, while important for task lighting, can take a more artistic approach as we now have kitchens with much better layered lighting through recessed lights and UCLS.”
4. Bright curtains on the windows.
Kitchen window treatments are a great opportunity to bring color, pattern and movement into the room. Those who agree with the idea of kitchen curtains should pay attention.
"When it comes to shades and patterns, don't be afraid to go big and bold in the kitchen," says Gray. “I always use a pattern or color for kitchen curtains because everything else in the room usually takes up a lot of space, so it helps separate everything while still keeping it visually interesting. You can definitely use bright and interesting curtains as kitchen curtains. Decorate the room's windows, but consider using additional prints or smaller curtains for seat cushions, throw pillows, and even kitchen table covers.
5. Painted tiles
Gone are the days when kitchen coverings and floors were chosen only for their intended purpose. This new year, designers recommend getting creative with your designs and adding more personality to this utilitarian space.
“I'm seeing a big shift toward hand-painted tiles, and I love it,” Gray says. "This is another way to add color, dimension and interest if you don't want to add it to your window coverings."
