Somehow, surprisingly, it's November. My lanterns are running low, the holidays are quickly approaching, and this month's LA Times Plants newsletter is full of gardening and plant-related events.
But first, let me tell you about my search for the cheapest, easiest and most effective way to control unwanted weeds and lawns to create a drought-tolerant landscape and better soil.
Linda Chucker-Scott, professor of horticulture and consulting arborist at Washington State University's Puyallup Research and Extension Center, says the best approach is not only simple, but supported by scientific research: keep the grass and/or weeds trimmed the least possible. . In short, head over heels,” he says.
“You don't need to remove the grass first or lay down a layer of newspaper or cardboard,” says Chucker-Scott, who explains it all on The Garden Professors, a science blog he helped create.
“Weeds (and grass) won't grow without light,” he said.
After about six weeks, harvest the chips. If the grass is still green, wait until it turns brown and rots, he said. Then dig into the soil, add new plants and mulch again to improve the soil.
His technique is based on a study published in 2005 in which he and others tested two ways to kill a patch of grassy blackberry bushes to make room for native plants. They cut a field and sprayed half of it with the herbicide glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup). The other half was covered in wood chips. They stay in the area all fall and winter, planting native trees in both areas and sitting back and watching.
“When it comes to glyphosate, all the weeds come back and all the native plants die,” he said. “For wood chips, we had 100% native plant survival. In fact, it was better than 100% because the snowflakes did so well that they started spreading, which was a game changer to me. Wood chips are so simple and natural. That we [he and his fellow woodworkers] are advocates for their convenience. I even have a coworker who says, “If there's something wrong with your landscaping, a pile of wood chips is the answer."
What about the supposed benefits of lasagna mulch when you cover the soil with well-moistened cardboard or newspaper before adding wood chips and other amendments? The issue angered Chucker-Scott, who has written several books debunking myths about the garden.
“There is no peer-reviewed research on the benefits of cardboard mulch,” he said, and there is little research showing that using cardboard mulch does more harm than good.
“My goal is to follow nature in how we manage our gardens and landscapes,” he wrote in April. "But deep cultivation isn't natural. It's madness."
Chucker-Scott was involved in the only scientific research he ever looked at using cardboard as mulch. A 2019 study looked at how carbon dioxide and oxygen move through soil and through different layers. A 4-inch layer of wood chips had the best air exchange of any mulch. A layer of cardboard with nothing on top is 10 times worse, and dust in the landscape is 100 times worse, he said.
“People don't think that oxygen is an important component of soil,” he said. “They want to suffocate weeds, but they also suffocate soil ecosystems and living organisms: moles, earthworms and microbes will suffer and perhaps die.”
In addition to stories of worms and fungi crawling under the cardboard, the creatures are trying to get oxygen, Chucker-Scott said.
A study published in May examined environmental contamination of chicken litter, including shredded cardboard. The study found that cardboard contains high levels of some dangerous pollutants, including persistent chemicals that are harmful to animals (including humans) and the wider environment. So why, he said, add soil to the garden?
Ventura plant pathologist James Downer, a Garden Professor blogger, agrees that cardboard-free wood chips are the best way to restore soil and kill unwanted grasses and weeds.
But Downer, a former horticulture consultant at the UC Ventura County Cooperative Extension Office and professor of plant sciences at Cal Poly Pomona, warns that Southern California has hot-weather weeds, such as bermudagrass, that are difficult to kill.
He recommends mowing the grass with 8- to 12-inch wood chips, then carefully pulling out emerging rhizomes or applying a fluzifop-p-butyl herbicide, such as Fusilade II, to kill invaders. (Note: The Environmental Protection Agency reports that flugifop-p-butyl is toxic to fish and other aquatic animals and may be harmful to humans if inhaled or absorbed through the skin.)
The chips are relatively easy to obtain, Downer said. Talk to a local tree trimming company and ask them to send you fresh wood chips for loggers, or join a wood chip collection initiative, which connects loggers who want to dispose of wood chips with people who need it. Chips are free, although you can get faster service for a small fee. However, please note that drops can be large enough to cover your route and can be delivered without warning.
Mulch defender
I've written a lot about mulching and the reports have been brilliant. Altadena landscape designer Lee Adams of Studio Petrichor is one of the most popular local advocates. He converted an old lawn at the Los Angeles County Arboretum into a Crescent Farm demonstration garden, using mulch and giant crop mounds to kill old grass, restore soil and help collect and conserve water.
Adams has long argued that cardboard used for packaging, such as Amazon boxes, is critical to creating good soil because it attracts beneficial mycorrhizal fungi. “The cardboard is simply pre-chewed cellulose and the glue is like fungal candy. If you offer children cereal or oatmeal for breakfast, you know what they will choose. And the cardboard pocket is the perfect place to copy."
“Using the right cardboard is important,” says Adams. No shiny surfaces or heavy ink, and stay away from flat sheets of agricultural cardboard, which lacks the adhesive of corrugated cardboard and seems to wrinkle rather than rot.
Adams straightened the cardboard boxes and removed the staples and tape before submerging them, burying them in the ground and covering them with fine wood chips.
He has used this technique in several landscape projects, including the La Cañada Flintridge landscape project designed by his partner Sean Maestretti, which received an honorable mention in Pacific Horticultural's 2023 Design Futurist Awards.
Adams has no titles. He is a full-time teacher and artist, teaching permaculture and landscaping techniques to help the environment. This has been fueled by research showing that different strains of mushrooms can withstand radiation, break down glyphosate, or break down PFAs or chemicals that persist in the environment.
There may be no exact science, Adams admits, but experience tells him that mulching with cardboard is more effective than using wood chips. According to him, the environmental crisis means we must act quickly.
Adams said, "I believe in science, but I don't think we have time to follow the [research] agenda of these models. We'd be better off taking the shotgun approach and seeing what works before we run out of time."
Chaker-Scott is impatient with the controversy. He says his anti-myth blogs generate a lot of hate mail, but he feels compelled to question an ideology without scientific evidence. “This is not about disagreement,” he wrote in the post. “One is realistic and supported by research, and the other is dogmatic belief, despite published research to the contrary.”
Who knew cartooning could be so controversial? I tried lasagna mulching and found that it helps loosen compacted soil. But laying down a thick layer of wood chips is so much easier than finding and leveling enough cardboard (because there's never enough) that I'm interested in trying this method for raking out stubborn weeds in my yard.
Bottom line: Read the blogs and research of gardening professors, walk through the arboretum's vibrant Crescent Farm habitat, just for inspiration, and realize that whichever option you choose, you're on your way to moving all those trees.
