Gardener Reveals Common Mistakes Most People Make When Growing Garlic: ‘Never Plant [it] In The Same Spot…

Gardening can be difficult if you don't have a green thumb. Instagram user Iris King (@life.with.iris.king) shows people how to maximize their garlic intake with a few simple tips.

In the video, King explains that he plants garlic in the fall, about two weeks before the first frost. “The larger the cloves, the greater the tuber yield,” he said. Tip – save the large tubers. He also says you should leave the skin and clove heads on the cloves to ensure they germinate properly.

King also recommends “don’t plant garlic in the same spot” two seasons in a row. He also explained how to plant cloves and grow them in the ground.

In the comments on her video, she answered long-standing questions, including whether garlic can be grown in pots and whether it can be planted in spring (spoiler alert: yes, as long as the soil is soft enough for the plant).

How useful is this?

Growing your own food has mental and physical health benefits. If you grow vegetables and fruits in your garden, you will likely increase your intake of healthy, nutrient-dense foods. It's also a relaxing activity that will bring peace, tranquility and, of course, delicious food.

Growing garlic and other vegetables at home is also an easy way to lower your weekly grocery bill and reduce the distance it takes for ingredients like garlic to get to your table. These distances, called “food miles,” result in large amounts of air pollution being released from vehicles, which can be mitigated by growing food in your garden.

Gardening can also be done in smaller spaces, like apartments, making it easier for city dwellers to participate.

What everyone is saying

Other Instagram users appreciated the advice King gave in his video. “Your video made me want to try growing garlic for the first time this year,” one user wrote.

"So funny!!! You inspired me," wrote another.

With a little time and patience, you too can get plenty of garlic, thanks to Iris King's tips.
