Description of the text provided by the architects. Almost three years ago, Rolf Felbaum, honorary president of Vitra, took a walk with architect Tsuyoshi Tane in Weil am Rhein, reminiscing about his childhood and the areas where the Vitra campus is today. Then a new structural idea was born: Tanya's Garden House will be completed in June 2023 and open during the week of Art Basel, in line with the concept of "Archaeology of the Future", which Tanya started with the memory of where architecture was.

"Like archaeologists, we begin the long process of exploring and deepening the memory of a place. It is a process of surprise and discovery that seeks to encounter what we do not know, what we have forgotten, what has been lost to modernization and globalization. The process of thinking about the future starting from the memory of a place, archeology explains step by step Tsuyoshi Tane.

Tani describes his architecture in his manifesto "Archaeology of the Future". This design process is carried out in all of Atelier's projects: the National Museum of Estonia (as DGT), the Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art, the Espace Musée de la Collection Al Thani at the Hôtel de la Marine in Paris or, more recently, the design commission for the new Imperial Hotel Tokyo building (to be completed in 2036).

Following this ideology, Tane Garden House was built on the concept of "on land".

By burning underground resources, traditional architecture plays a role in climate change. Tane Garden House is fundamentally in favor of nature, using earthy materials such as stone, wood, straw and rope. In addition to the choice of materials, the construction itself is done by local craftsmen using local materials. For example, the stone and wood used in the house were bought locally and transported a short distance: 28 km for granite stone (from the quarry to the brickyard and finally to the Vitra campus) and 50 km for wood (from the Black Forest to the factory and finally to the campus). Tani not only limited the implementation of his concept to the construction phase of the Garden House, but also included it in the renovation to maintain sustainability. Tani is convinced that the sustainability of architecture can only be protected and maintained by its residents.

Tane's garden is very compact with 15 m² and can accommodate about 8 people. Equipped with a small coffee corner, it offers enough space for workshops, but is mainly designed to store the gardening tools used by the team in Udolf's garden. It is also for the Vitra staff who care for the bees on campus and for those who look after the emerging garden next to the Garden House. A small fountain for sitting outside and washing or washing shoes and dishes is also part of the design. In addition, the building located in the center of the campus will have an observation deck where visitors can enjoy a unique 360 degree view of the Udolf Garden, the Umbrella House and the rest of the Vitra campus.

Tsuyoshi Tane's addition to the campus is the fourth by a Japanese architect, following Kazuo Shinahara's Umbrella House, the Tada Ando Conference Pavilion and the SANAA Factory Building.

Tsuyoshi Tane's work and his Garden House project will be presented in a special exhibition in the hall of the Vitra Design Museum in autumn 2023.
