North Texas (CBSNewsTexas.com) - Success can be shared in your garden. And it should be.

Some perennials can be removed. New shoots root in the same space as established roots and the plant becomes 'root-bound'. Distribution of food, oxygen and water through a compact plant community can be challenging.

Help by dividing the plant, often by cutting it in half. This should be done every three to five years, depending on how well the plant is growing. Cut with a sharp shovel or a large (and sharp) hand shovel. Go all the way from the crown of the rootstock and below. Fill in the newly created hole, then water and feed the plant to help it recover faster.

Give your scraps to a friend or neighbor. In other words, thanks to your success, your multi-year balances are now transferrable.

There are few plants that are such excellent candidates as Basalongus. Lily of the valley divides easily. If grown in a good location, they spread quickly. You can cut off one of the larger cuttings and split the plant in half. You can take a new half and fill an existing bed or make a new one.

Or wrap the plant in damp newspaper and take it to a friend or family member. passes.

Dividing the canna lily is easier because it reproduces by rhizomes. They make great single plants that can easily overwhelm your established bed. Discover them and share them. Canna lilies come in so many different colors and patterns that trading them with other growers makes a great way to expand your color without buying multiple varieties.

Steve Huddleston of the Fort Worth Botanical Garden sent me a list of his favorite houseplants. Everything needs to be divided regularly so that the plant is strong and easy to transplant. They are also plants that take root well in our area.

This is not a complete list, just the best candidates.
