With fall on the horizon, it's the perfect time to get outside and enjoy your surroundings.
This year's Placitus Garden Tour is scheduled for Sunday, September 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
"The garden tour started seven years ago and I am a master gardener," said Plasetos Garden Tour leader Sandra Liakas. "Some of my friends in Albuquerque and Corrales, two cities that offer park tours, asked me if I would be interested in creating a Placitas Park tour, and that's how it all started."
The seven gardens featured this year are: The Raven Hollow Garden, The Garden of Knowledge, The Forest Sanctuary, The Gaze Garden, “Infinity,” Post-Wild New Mexico, and The High Desert Oasis.
"I think they're all beautiful, so it's hard to say which one stands out because it depends on your interests," Liakos said. "If they come to our information desk on the day of the visit, we can give them advice or you can ask the gardeners about the garden, which has beautiful landscaped gardens and a variety of plants."
Local artists will also participate in the tour.
"Most of the original artwork will be produced the day of the tour and displayed at the Plasitos Community Library in Gracie Lee Hall," Liakos said. "The library is where the food cart is and there will be music and you can check out the art gallery in the garden."
Additional garden artwork will be on display in the library for purchase.
"It's not quite fall, it's late spring, and that makes it so unique that the weather is a little bit different every year," Liakas said. "But the best thing now is that when you go to the garden, we have lots of wildflowers, sunflowers and a variety of grasses."
The ride benefits master gardeners at Sandoval Extension and the Placitas Community Library.
"They are generally used to promote horticultural education and help the community with other types of horticultural education to the public," Liakos said. "Every year we grow a little bit bigger and plan to donate to an additional charity."
Liakas is sure that those who attend will not be disappointed.
"It's a good, fun time and everyone is excited to see people's gardens," Liakos said. "We'll have garden experts to talk to, not just gardeners, and we'll have a horticultural consultant to talk to you about your tree problems."
