Visitors to City Hall Plaza in Boston will soon have another way to relax and enjoy the fall weather.
Mayor Michelle Wu announced Wednesday that the city will reopen a temporary brewery on the square. It will run until early November, weather permitting, and will be operated by Franklin-based 67 Degrees Brewing.
67 Degrees, a brewery owned by women and black veterans, was selected by the city after a competition to find a supplier for the brewery, Wu's office said. 67 Degrees' offering was chosen for its "commitment to social impact, diversity, inclusiveness and the use of local ingredients".
The selection process was coordinated by the City's Office of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion and its Department of Heritage Management.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to reopen City Hall Brewery," Chief Operating Officer Dion Irish said in a statement. "It's great to be able to use city property to revitalize downtown Boston while supporting local black-owned businesses."
The brewery, operated by 67 Degrees, made its debut on Wednesday. From now on, it will be open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. Food trucks will be open during business hours.
This fall, the city will begin a search for a long-term supplier to take over the brewery starting this spring.
The brewery's opening is part of the Wu administration's efforts to revitalize downtown and use the town square.
"Municipal Plaza is a space that brings people together and creates community," Wu said in a statement. "I am grateful to 67 Degrees Brewing and excited to welcome residents, staff and visitors to join us at their newly opened Fisher Park Beer Garden on Municipal Square."
Because of the pandemic, downtown is seeing less foot traffic and less consumer spending, Wu's office said. With these initiatives, officials are trying to increase consumer confidence and support small businesses.
In June, Wu announced the launch of Boston Together Again. This initiative offers cultural, gastronomic and wellness events in the city center throughout the summer and until the beginning of October. Boston Together Again is specifically designed to increase pedestrian traffic downtown.
Olivier Edouard, founder of 67 Degrees Brewing, said the brewing team was "particularly excited" to share Mara's signature Belgian passion beer with customers in the garden.
"This is one of our biggest sellers, and in October, proceeds from its sale will go to an organization that provides support services for breast cancer patients," Edwards said in a statement. "It's great to be able to work for the municipality. We have great ideas for events until November. We look forward to connecting with the community in good weather, beer, art and music events.”
