What is a garden without digging?
“There is no need to dig up the ground to prepare a space for growing vegetables,” explains Phil.
“Instead of taking the compost myself, loosening the soil, digging it up and mixing it, I put the compost on the surface as mulch and plant it. »

The reason this no-dig gardening method works so well is because there are worms in the garden.
“When you think about it, they evolved toward the surface to get humus and leaf mold. [When they come to the surface], they create channels in the ground, and that's where you start to get this great structure," says Phil.
“When you dig into compost, you destroy your structure.”
Benefits of No-Dig Gardens
Not only does it take less effort, but Phil says there are fewer weeds in the beds.
“I pick up a lot less weeds when I'm not digging, because every time you dig you bring old weed seeds to the surface and they start popping up everywhere,” says Phil.
“When I put compost on the surface, I choke on the grass seeds.
“It’s a lot less work.”
Organic mulches and mulches help retain soil moisture, reducing the need for frequent watering.
