Chicago-based interior designer Julie Mitchiner of Jam Interior Design is full of ideas. as it should be; Michener has been creating and improving interiors for 13 years.
With countless projects under his belt, he knows the basics of science. This includes decorating items that the customer would never put in their house or home.
Read on for Michener's thoughts on six household products to avoid and the practical, customizable items she recommends instead.
Washable rugs

"I'm here to tell you that you can do amazing things with children and pets," she said. “A well-made rug, made from durable materials and natural fibers like wool and jute, is very easy to maintain. A beautiful handmade rug can last for generations. »
A high-quality rug, such as a wool or hand-woven rug, is always a good investment, he says. And washed rugs seem like a cheap fad to Michener.
"I don't understand the appeal: these are fabrics with simple prints," he says. "To be honest, I don't think people move furniture regularly to put rugs in the washing machine."
Marble effect porcelain tiles
When it comes to kitchen or bathroom tiles, Michener never buys porcelain tiles that look like marble, and they don't think you should either. "Released," he said.
Although the reduced price is tempting, trust Michener: Faux pavers will never look like marble or natural stone.
"The truth is, if that's not in your budget, there are many beautiful classic porcelain and ceramic tiles that are affordable and don't look like marble," says Michiner.
The art of mass production
If your neighbor has the same wisdom as you, Mitchiner says no. He says that big salespeople who often have words do not have jobs, personality and personal relationships.
Instead, Michener recommends buying pieces from your favorite artist. Don't be too quick to assume that original artwork is beyond your budget, and if so, try shopping at their print shop.
You can also find amazing original art at mystery shops, often already framed.
"Artists often offer reproductions of their work, so you can buy knowing you're supporting real artists," he said. "Everything is more fun than the love of happy laughter."

External water distribution cooler
Mitchiner recommends taking every opportunity to hide your fridge's mechanical elements, including a handy but not-so-modern filling station. If you want an affordable way to water easily, choose a stylish faucet that matches your main kitchen faucet instead.
"The fridge should never be the main attraction of the kitchen, so don't draw attention to it," she says.
Suitable furniture sets
Michener says building a home takes time, so don't try to cheat the design process by using matching furniture. This includes bedding (bed frame, dresser and nightstands), dining sets (with tables and chairs) and perhaps the worst option, living room sets.
While it's tempting to fill the room with matching pieces and calling out the furniture completely, they provide an overall look that lacks personality.
"When designing a home, the goal is to make it look layered, interesting and unique," says Michener. "It shouldn't be a one-size-fits-all solution." Find individual items you like instead of just copying and pasting from the catalog.
Armor
Michener says there are many options for window treatments that can be both beautiful and functional. Shy blinders? a bit.
Instead of blinds, Michener recommends curtains, woven wooden shades or roman shades — all stylish options that block the sun and add privacy.
"They're easy to clean," Michiner says.
