Why You Should Bury Your Garden Tools In Sand, According To Experts

According to experts, garden tools should be buried in sand to store them for a long time and keep them free from rust.

We think it's safe to say summer is in full swing, and what better outdoor activity than a bit of gardening? With all the gardening ideas you might have in your back pocket, it's important to make sure your tools are up to date throughout the summer, especially if they've been tucked away under your garden protection ideas for a long time.

Improper storage of gardening tools can aggravate problems such as rust. According to the experts at Toolstation, an inexpensive, easy and effective way to store and protect tools is to put them in a bucket of sand and oil.

"Add a small amount for every inch of sand and stir to spread the oil everywhere," adds Tim Warren, AdWiki's DIY expert. Add enough oil to keep the sand moist, as this will make it oily or wet.

Make sure the metal tips of the tools are sanded during storage so that they are properly protected. If the tools have wooden handles, it may be necessary to treat the wood with oil before long-term storage to prevent it from splitting or drying out.

Before trying it yourself, however, the experts at Toolstation added: "It should be noted that this method should only be used for tools that have no moving parts, such as shovels, forks and Forks." Placing moving parts in the sand can damage them.

"Also, while this technique is great for preventing rust, if the tools you're using have smooth, shiny surfaces, sanding can scratch them." Painted tools can also be damaged by abrasion, which is less of a problem for heavily used work surfaces like spade blades.

One thing to keep in mind is that this method of keeping your device rust-proof is only effective if you don't seal it in the first place. This viral Tik Tok video posted by the experts at Epic Gardening shows how oil and block are used to first remove rust, paint and repaint it before storing it in sand.
