We are a country blessed with many different cultures and have grown quite a bit in recent years, but as we approach 40 million people, our identity and values as Canadians inevitably change.

Our diversity and multiculturalism are our greatest strengths as a nation, but as Canadians we must discover and hold on to the values we share, which can become part of our culture.

One of these shared values is something that most Canadians subscribe to, and they can do it in a variety of ways because it's a multifaceted activity. I've never been happy with garden labels because their effects are so limited.

Creating landscapes that add beauty to homes and communities, benefit the environment through canopy cover, provide habitat for wildlife and pollinators, produce food for ourselves and our neighbors, provide shelter to reduce stress, and promote our health and well-being. Several things that give a broader perspective to gardening terminology.

Saturday, June 17 is National Parks Day The nature of gardening has changed since Canada's first Garden Day was celebrated on June 14, 2013, an initiative of the Canadian Parks Council and the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association and the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association.

The objective is to raise awareness about the importance of public and private gardens, the value of home gardens, the benefits of gardening and the promotion of environmental protection. National Garden Day is a celebration of our collective Canadian garden culture.

This year highlights Live the Garden Life, which provides a comprehensive perspective on the many benefits of gardening. It's about sharing our skills and passion for gardening. I love that many of our young generation share their creative ideas on many social media platforms, but if you have a beautiful garden, a nice patio or a big vegetable garden, why not invite the neighbors, especially those who are new to your area. , to join us. See for yourself and be inspired by your own creative ideas?

Many communities offer garden tours, which have now been reactivated after the suspension of Covid restrictions, and they offer a great opportunity to visit individual private gardens to see what fellow gardeners have created. You'd be surprised how many people come on these tours. They are often held as community fundraisers, and organizers are always looking for participants. So if you think your garden is worth a future visit, please let us know.

One of the new targeted gardening activities is creating habitats specifically to benefit pollinators. I admire our young generation for their greater commitment to nature and their desire to improve the environment in every possible way.

These gardens not only attract pollinators, but also beneficial insects like butterflies. Many of our native birds, hummingbirds and amphibians, especially frogs, will also benefit from your plants.

Creating more native habitats including water, berry and herbaceous plants and nesting material for natural food is very important and has become an integral part of gardens today.

Even vegetable gardens, mainly due to high prices of fresh fruits and vegetables, are regaining dominance. Learning to grow a wide variety of foods in unconventional ways, from soft fruits, berries and varieties of apples, pears, plums and cherries, has become almost a necessity in our small space gardens, not only for us but to share with neighbors and local food banks in need. .

When planning for fall and winter, it's important to grow root vegetables, winter squash and leafy greens that hold up well and keep for a long time. Onions, carrots, potatoes, radishes and radishes, beets and leeks can be left in the ground or stored to enjoy all winter.

Speaking of sharing, home cut flower gardens are huge these days. Dahlias, snapdragons, lilies, ginsengs and delphiniums will produce flowers well into the fall that you can enjoy in your own home or as gifts for friends and neighbors. Cut flowers are considered the new "hug" and people appreciate it more than you might think.

Any time you can add flowers or shade trees to your garden and surroundings, it makes a small but important difference. More canopy coverage is needed, especially in urban areas. A mature cooling plant operating eight hours a day is equivalent to four air conditioners. All trees produce oxygen and absorb carbon, so planting them is a great way to help reduce our carbon footprint.

If your city is a park-friendly community, you have the mayor, city council, and park board to thank. If not, encourage them in a better way to adopt more urban forestry practices.

Downtown green spaces, community gardens, eco-friendly gardens and colorful plants help make our communities more livable and visitor-friendly.

It is also important to visit and support our public parks. They are a popular visitor attraction and a regular source of garden inspiration.
Many garden stores are constantly bringing out new and exciting trees, shrubs, perennials and perennials that can add color and new dimensions to your home garden. They also provide many food plants like persimmons, blackberries and other exotic fruits that can give a new flavor to our garden.
