Gardening Workshops Offered In Preparation For Spring

While it's still winter, the University of Nevada, Reno Extension is preparing new and experienced gardeners for a variety of online and in-class gardening and horticulture seminars. Taking place this month and next, this Southern Nevada gardening workshop will focus on gardening, pruning, and troubleshooting.

"Gardening might not be what you think about most when it's cold, but there's no better time to learn and get started," says Elaine Feigin, extension program manager.
Workshop details include:

  • On January 26 and 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., pomegranate trees, fig trees and other fruit trees: workshops on care and pruning. Master gardener Yutaka Nomura will teach you how to take care of the trees, keep them healthy and prune them to get the best fruit harvest. Part of the course takes place indoors and part outdoors, demonstrating the basic techniques of pruning figs and pomegranates. Admission is $10. Register here for the January 26 class.   • January 31, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Zoom course “Trees and shrubs: planning, planting and maintenance”. Experienced master gardener Mike Kauzlarich will walk you through the basics of what you need to know at all stages of your trees and shrubs' life. The lecture covers the right choice of location and preparation, as well as the long-term care and maintenance of your precious plants. Free registration. Register here for January 31.
  • On February 8, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Zoom lesson on biological pest control. Improve your knowledge of controlling insects in your garden without using chemicals with Gardner Extension Master Laurie Evans. Participants will learn how to control pests without harming people and pets. Free registration. Register here for the February 8 course.
  • February 11, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Gardening in a small space: A large-scale gardening project. Angela O'Callaghan, Ph.D., will teach gardeners of all experience levels how to successfully grow food in the Mojave Desert. O'Callaghan tells you what you need to know to get started and have a successful garden this year. Admission is $10. Register here for the February 11 class.
  • On February 15, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Cultivate under the stars: maintenance and pruning of the pomegranate. zoom class. Did you know that pruning rules for pomegranates differ from those for other fruit trees? Master Grower Coordinator Heather Freeman will share best practices for caring for and pruning pomegranate trees for maximum yield. Free registration. Register here for the February 15 class.
  • Feb. 16 and 18, 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Southern Nevada Wine Care and Pruning Class. Master gardeners Yutaka Nomura (February 16) and Don White (February 18) will teach the basics of planting, tending and caring for vines. Part of the lesson is in class and the last part is a practical demonstration of how to cut sticks. Admission is $10. You can register online for the February 16 course here.
